Nessie, op.6
1995

Baritone and piano, to a text by Edwin Morgan
Duration c.3'

Programme note

'Nessie' was influenced by a sailing holiday on Noch Less when I was about ten, and was written in between watching the rugby world cup in 1995. My memories of Loch Ness are that it snowed every day (it was April) and that I got cold tea all over the postcards I was writing when we nearly capsized.

The rhythmic material is stolen from two Scottish folk tunes (I forget which ones), while the pitch content is derived from the notes which I consider to be either blue or green. Towards the end of the song the listener may be able to hear the Scottish rugby team sink without trace.
