Madiel, op.4
1994

Original version: Oboe and string quartet
Revised version: Oboe and string orchestra
Duration c.5'

Programme note

The name 'Madiel' is that of the eponymous angel from Prokofiev's opera, 'The Fiery Angel'. The solo oboe takes the character of Madiel while the strings take the part of the heroine, Renata. The shape of the piece is loosely based on events in the opera, with the relationship between the oboe and the strings developing between the sections.
The melodic material is built on a nine-note scale.
