Puff
Adder, op.14 |
Treble and tenor recorders |
| Programme note | ||
'Puff Adder', for treble and tenor recorders, begins with a slow, rather slimy section, in which both players hum down their instruments as well as playing, and hiss at each other. This lugubrious music is interrupted three times by snippets of a frantic dance. After the third interruption, a slower dance begins, occupying some sort of middle ground between the contrasting material already heard. At this point quarter-tones start to creep into the music. Quite soon, the smooth surface of the slow dance is disturbed by harsher articulation, and more extremes of register and dynamics. The music begins to accelerate, and transforms itself into the frantic dance of the opening, but this time the frenzy works itself through before spluttering to a halt. The music of the slow introduction re-establishes itself, hinting at the thematic material of the slow dance before expiring. |
